A Different take
Sir Guy of Gisborne came to stand alongside Lady Marian as the elegant carriage of their guest arrived with blowing trumpets. He eyed the red dress she wore suggestively. “Marian, who’d have thought…” He made no attempt to hide his thoughts.
He turned his attention to their guest when the carriage came to a halt on front of them. With contempt he saw a queerly dressed man get out, a white kerchief fluttering in the count’s hand as the Sherriff welcomed him to Nottingham.
“Tell me, are all of the roads in England so bad?” Their visitor asked, “I feel like I’ve been beaten like an egg.”
Gisborne had to hold back the snort that threatened to escape his lips. Really, this disgrace called himself a man?! He vaguely heard the Sheriff talk about safety and all. Surely this count couldn’t be serious when claiming he and his men could take the ruffians on the road? As if.
He noticed the Sherriff step aside, thus presenting Marian and himself to their guest. With slight distaste he saw how the German count flourished his cream hat as a greeting to Marian.
‘It seems like he has taken a liking to Marian already.’ he thought gleefully.
Gisborne was flabbergasted when the count only acknowledged Marian with a polite nod before fixing his eyes on the young man at her side (a.k.a. himself). Apparently the hat-flourishing had not been meant for her.
“Had I known what would’ve been here, I’d have taken winged horses.” He said graciously with twinkle in his eyes as he addressed Gisborne.
The young man shot an alarmed look at the Sherriff. Said man only shrugged, without words he made clear to carry on as they had decided on before. Gisborne remembered: “We will extend the count every courtesy.”
“Uh, Lord Gisborne has made it his personal responsibility to make sure your stay is as confortable as possible.” The Sherriff told their guest with a pointed look to Gisborne.
“Really?” The count murmured, sounding very pleased about it.
Gisborne thought this was NOT what he had expected for when the Sherriff asked about his knowledge of German.
